Truth is simple, but the human mind under the influence of the ego loves to complicate it. The ego wants to be special, better than, more than. It believes that the more complicated something is the more valuable it is. It strives to layer more and more over simple things to make them better. If our own ego is in control we’ll see what it creates and think it’s better or more valuable, and we’ll be pulled away from the simple truth.
Something I’ve seen on Twitter several times brought this to mind recently and it makes a great example of ego’s striving for superiority. Some who have received Reiki training are making their brand of Reiki more than others by adding something to it. I’ve seen Angel Reiki, Heart Reiki, Money Reiki, and several other names that indicate it isn’t just ordinary Reiki. If you’re not familiar with it, Reiki is universal life energy, the energy that creates, animates, and sustains the universe. Does that sound like something that can be made more powerful? Does such an energy require humans to make it more effective? Of course not.
Reiki is just one example of how the ego-ruled mind tries to make the pure and simple truth better and more valuable, in the process establishing its own superiority. The world is full of such examples. The mind latches onto them without a second thought. Every time it does, it leads us away from the truth.
Truth is simple. Truth is clear. Truth is eternal. Truth has no need to be superior to anything. It requires no “added value.” Truth doesn’t say, “Hey, look at me! I’m better! I’m smarter! I can do more!” Truth just is. It doesn’t run around trying to get attention or employ flashing neon signs. It just is. Truth stands still and shines a light. It offers that light freely to all weary travelers who are done with complications.
Ironically, that is exactly what Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, did in a park in Japan, according to the story. He stood in a public space holding a torch in broad daylight. When asked why he replied, “I’m waiting for those who are seeking the true light.” Truth waits for us to come to it, sit still, and listen. Truth awakens in our awareness from the place where it has always been … in our heart.
