If there was only one thing that made the arduous process of awakening consciousness worth while, it would be this … unconditional ease of being. It’s so much more than peace or love or joy, yet includes all of these. It is completely without strain, gentle, fluid, and oh so delightful. It requires no specific conditions and is not diminished by outer circumstances even when challenges arise. Where does this experience come from and how do you get to it?
It comes from experiencing being yourself, but that sounds deceptively simple. When you get there, you realize that it is simple and completely natural, but it sure doesn’t feel like that before the moment that you are just you, being. We’ve all heard the phrase a million times, “Just be yourself,” but nobody told us what it means. Being yourself, just yourself, means not being any of the things that your mind thinks you are that are actually not true. The problem is that until you get a glimpse of the truth of you, you identify with all the stuff made up in your head. We all do. It’s the nature of being human in a world that does not yet know who it is.
So how do you experience yourself just being you if you don’t know for sure what’s the real you and what isn’t? You don’t get here from there without some work. All the false identities the mind says are you have to go but you can’t release them until you see them, and that means becoming aware of your thoughts. Listen to what your mind tells you about you. Don’t compare it to what others believe, but test it for the resonance of truth in your heart. If it feels off, it is. Ask within, “What’s the truth here?” The answer will not come from your mind, but from a place of infinite depth within the area of your heart and/or solar plexus.
Once you begin this self-inquiry you’ll be amazed at all the silly stories your mind has told you about who you are, how you are, and what you are or are not capable of. It gets easier to spot the distortions the more you look right at them and seek the truth. As you see each one, declare that you are releasing it. Our words are very powerful when they come from conscious awareness. If you feel that the release has not occurred you can ask what is required for it to be complete. Inspiration will arise from within to show you what is related to it that needs to be seen before the release can be done.
It may seem at times that the distortions in your mind are a bottomless pit. I assure you, they are not. The more you free yourself of identification with false concepts the more the light of who you are shines through, making the path clearer and smoother. Then one day you’ll discover the pure awareness that is experiencing every moment through your body, mind, and emotions … and you’ll know this pure awareness as who you really are. That experience is exquisite! This is where you’ll know unconditional ease of being.
